What's new in Intuiface Version 6.6

We’re capping off the month of July with a new feature release. It’s like a cool glass of iced tea (or Rosé if you prefer) on hot summer’s day!

Intuiface Version 6.6 is a theme-free release, meaning we’ve identified interesting, ripe opportunities and threw some smarts at them. Here’s what you’ll find.

  • New Player activation options
We’ve covered the details in a dedicated blog post but - in a nutshell - we’re introducing some very low-friction approaches to Player licensing. For example, you’ll find QR code and activation code approaches that only require a hand-held device. And there’s a batch activation option enabling you to identify any number of Players for self-licensing.
  • Trigger actions using Player tags
We’ve identified a savvy way to trigger actions in a running Intuiface experience. The System Information Interface Asset has been updated with a new property that can read, in real-time, the Player tags assigned to Player via the Share and Deploy Console. With this ability, experiences can be equipped with triggers that react to particular tag values. Change those tag values in real-time and running experiences will respond. We’ve identified some very interesting scenarios for you to chew on.
  • Powerful approach to displaying websites on the iPad and Android devices
We’ve added a native tablet-like approach to displaying websites on the iPad and Android devices, an alternative to the Web Browser Asset. Here, you can open a dedicated browser window that sits in front of the running experience, just as you’ve seen on a tablet when opening webpages from apps like Twitter. The reason this is a big deal is this new approach overcomes Intuiface’s inability on the iPad and Android devices to display websites that reject cross-origin resource sharing - which is quite a few websites.
  • Improved Video Asset performance on Windows
We’ve updated our Windows Media Player (WMP) support, making it the preferred Video Asset option on Windows PCs. We still let you choose to use VLC instead, but we suggest you only do this if using videos with WMP-unsupported codecs, with transparency, or delivered over HTTPS. Bonus: You can now specify which video engine to use when putting videos in an experience or scene background.
  • Updated Chromium engine in the Windows-based Web Browser Asset
We’ve just jumped the Chromium web-rendering engine used in the Web Browser Asset on Windows from Version 65 to Version 81, a version released earlier this year. This means improved PDF rendering and a lot more stability and security for the minority of you who might have encountered otherwise.
  • Improved access to the Shopping List Interface Asset
Intuiface Composer will now ship with the Shopping List Interface Asset. We originally forced you to open a Marketplace sample to see it but the value of this IA has increased tremendously after the release of our Browse and Select reference design. It’s just too useful to hide!
  • Enhanced documentation about how to populate collections with remotely stored content
Want to point collections to a folder (including those with Excel spreadsheets) on the file system rather than use a custom interface asset? Believe it or not, on Windows, you have more than one approach to choose from. We’ve detailed three approaches for connecting collections to folders whose contents can be modified without the use of Composer.

This is excellent! The player tagging is great. For multiple display projects, it’s now much easier to tell each display to show specific content. It wasn’t a bad thing to use the Computer Name in the system info, but that wasn’t very flexible if a PC was replaced or moved at some point. The tagging system will make it much easier to ensure the right displays show the right content.

Also, can’t wait to try the new player registration! Great work everyone.
